MP3Tools Release Notes, IMPORTANT

Version Info

Download

The download comes in 2 pieces, the base install which includes a non-functional version of the program's exe and all the dlls and controls, and the latest version of the executable.
Once you have done the base install once, you only need to download the new executable for upgrades (unless advised differently in the Version Info at the bottom of this page..

Download base install

Download current exe (copy to your install directory)

Software License available here.

Installation

Unzip the MP3Tools-base.zip file in a temporary directory and run the Setup.exe program.
Unless you change the default settings, the program will install in C:\Program Files\MP3Tools and create an entry in the Start menu.
If you select another directory, make a note of it.
Then download the MP3Tools.exe file directly into the program's installation directory.
It will overwrite the MP3Tools.exe file created by the base install.

Prerequisite

This program has only been tested under Windows XP. To play MP3's, it relies on the MultiMedia Control, a Windows ActiveX control. The program may or may not work under other versions of Windows, and it may not even work under another installation of Windows XP if the MultiMedia Control does not have access to the MP3 codecs.

However, even if MP3Tools does not play your MP3's you still can split them. It will be so much harder to find out where you need to cut however, since MP3Tools was designed to make that task easy.

This is very preliminary and incomplete. Feel free to come back or ask questions if you can't wait...

Setup and Operation

The program was designed to make it easy to select a specific segment of the file to save or remove from the recording.
Check the following features, and use the program a little bit to get familiar with it, then let me know what may be missing.

  • Select "File"->"Open" from the menu and open an MP3 file.
    You can play the file immediately by clicking the Play button of the MultiMedia Player.
  • You can switch the time displays between seconds and mm:ss by clicking on the time value.
  • If you click on the "<" and ">" arrows to the left and right of the progress bar, you will skip a fixed amount of time. You can choose the amount of time between 5 seconds and 3 minutes. The change the time step, richt click on any of the arrows and select the time step.
  • Click on "Snap" to enter the current time in either of the sliders.

    As always, there are no guarantees. If you have questions, I will do my best to address them.

    Bugs?? Nah!!!

    Acknowledgments

    This project includes work by others, including:

    Version info

    Version: 0.0.30 (July 30, 2005)
    * Replaced the MultiMedia Control with the MediaPlayer control. It turns out the MMC had become a little picky and would not run consistently on all machines. It does not always find the codecs and therefore cannot always play MP3's or other audio formats. Because it uses the same architecture as the Windows Media Player, the Media Player control is the way to go for VB programs anyhow.
    IMPORTANT NOTE: You need to download the base package with this version, as it contains the MediaPlayer control.

    Version: 0.0.23 (January 11, 2005)
    * Bug Fixes

    Version: 0.0.20 (January 9, 2005)
    * Initial release
