I occasionally do translations between French and English documents (both ways), primarily for technical documents related to my job as an electronic and software engineer (specifications, requests for proposals, proposals, contractual documents, test procedures, manuals and such.)
As everyone has experienced, many products manufactured offshore could use better translation of their user's manuals.
In that endeavor, translation software can be a great help for translators like me and for casual users as well. Of course, it will be a long time before software can completely replace human translation, but for many applications, software can get you 60 to 80% of the way, and in many cases, that's sufficient to at least understand the general meaning of a document, and for a translator, it can save many keystrokes.
Compared to professional human translation, the cost will in general be a very small fraction, even if you buy commercial software.
Along those lines, I will occasionally review translation software in this page.
