Tone Generator - Release Notes

Download

The download comes in 2 pieces, the base install which includes either a non-functional or an older version of the program's exe and all the dlls and controls, and the latest version of the executable.
Once you have done the base install once, you only need to download the new executable for upgrades (unless advised differently in the Version Info at the bottom of this page..

Download base install

Download current exe (copy to your install directory)

Software License available here.

Installation

Unzip the ToneGenerator-base.zip file in a temporary directory and run the Setup.exe program.
Unless you change the default settings, the program will install in C:\Program Files\ToneGenerator and create an entry in the Start menu.
If you select another directory, make a note of it.
Then download the ToneGenerator.exe file directly into the program's installation directory.
It will overwrite the ToneGenerator.exe file created by the base install.

Prerequisite

This program has only been tested under Windows XP. The program should but may not work under other versions of Windows.

This is very preliminary and incomplete. Feel free to come back or ask questions if you can't wait...

Setup and Operation

Enter the frequency(ies) you want generated, and click "Generate". That's all there is to it.

The program saves all settings when you exit.

The program works by creating very short audio files in the program's directory, then feeding those to the DirectSound engine, so the program must have write access to it's installation directory (it will not run from a read-only media, such as a CD-ROM).

Tone Separation works as follows:

  • This is only useful when you have selected two tones.
  • If you have selected only one tone, the Separation setting is to the left.
  • When two tones are selected, moving the Separation setting to the right forces each tone out of the left and right channels respectively (no mixing).
  • When the Separation setting is to the left, both tones are output on both channels equally (fully mixed).

Important Note:

For best results (no interruption in the audio signal), make sure no other program is running in the background.
This will depend on how fast your computer is, and what kind of task is running in the background. On a fast computer, it may not matter.
The program does not continuously access the hard drive when generating tones, only very briefly when you click on "Generate".

As always, there are no guarantees. If you have questions, I will do my best to address them.
